Which is Right for You - Body Butter or Body Lotion?
While natural skin oils act as a protective barrier, weather, pollution, stress, and aging can have a drying effect. To retain this lost moisture, we often reach for body lotions or body butters. How do these two products stack up against each other?
Body butter has the thickest consistency with an oily finish and high viscosity. On the other hand, Body lotions are of a lighter texture with the thinnest consistency.
Lotion emulsions are made by blending oils and water. Body butters are typically a mix of 100% natural butters such as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter, kokum butter or beeswax and natural oils like jojoba oil, coconut oil, grape seed oil, or almond oil.
Put in simple terms, once they sink into the skin, body butters have the longest staying power. Ingredients like shea butter and beeswax create a protective barrier on the skin, which is especially helpful in the dry, winter season. When it comes to longevity of body lotions, the hydration elements evaporate into the atmosphere quickly and are not suitable for intense and long lasting needs.
Body lotions give you lightweight moisture and tend to be more suitable for summer time or extremely oily skin. Body butters are useful for hand and foot care, cuticle softening, dry skin care, massage and all over skincare and softening. Body butters are the best pick if you want to avoid pregnancy stretch marks. Body butter is more moisturizing than lotion because it’s not made with water as lotion is usually a combination of oil and water.
For intense whole body moisturization with long lasting results and without the toxic overload, natural and organic body butters are the ideal choice for all skin types. The main thing is to use a body butter or body lotion that’s suited for your skin type and use it consistently. Most importantly, choose products with nontoxic ingredients.
As a savvy consumer, always check the ingredients list. And make no assumptions that if one product in a company's lineup is good, they’re all good. Look for a product that’s non-comedogenic ((it won’t clog your pores), non-irritating to your skin, 100% pure and natural - preferably organic - and cruelty-free. Steer clear of mineral oils, polyethylene glycol (PEG, which is a petroleum), parabens (preservatives), phthalates (preserves the longevity of fragrances/parfums), and silicones ((used to eliminate greasiness).
